How to Stay Sane as a Mom

Last month was especially stressful. It seemed like my girls were fighting constantly. Actually “constantly” is the norm. Whatever more than constantly looks like – that’s what we were experiencing here at home. Add to that more drama with their biological father, and some small but palpable health issues of my own, and I was at my wit’s end. I attended mass, which was calming, but I still couldn’t shake off the extra stress.

Then my friend, Tracey invited me out to a “Moms’ Night”. Basically she organized an outing where moms could leave the kids and husbands at home, and go out to have fun together. What a wonderful idea, I thought. I love my family but I hadn’t gone out without them in ages. So I put leftovers in the fridge for them to re-heat for dinner, and met up with the other moms.

For the inaugural outing, we went bowling. I hadn’t bowled in years but I didn’t care. A handful of the women were good, but the rest of us showed up just to have fun. In fact, many of us bonded over how bad we were. Apparently, my specialty is gutter balls, which cracked everyone up – all in good fun.

It was great. For the most part, we didn’t even talk much about the kids, which was part of the point, I think. We got to be silly and escape our worries for a couple hours. I can’t say it made everything better, but I definitely recommend it to any mom looking to blow off some steam. If you’re not sure how to organize your own Mom’s Night, just start by calling a friend. Now your network is doubled.

A Pain in my Life: Part 1

A Pain in my Life: Part 1

Fibromyalgia: HOW did this happen to me? How did I become so sick? The road to discovery has been paved with PAIN!!!

I took so many things for granted when I was younger.

We-often-take-for-granted-the-very-things

I thought there would always be time for the things I didn’t get to do or say. I thought my kids would stay babies. I thought my husband and I would always be madly in love. I thought my Grandma would always be able to do everything with ease. Perhaps the thing I took for granted the most was my health. I thought I would always be healthy. I could eat and drink whatever I wanted. I mean why not I didn’t gain a pound in those days. I thought I would always be a healthy, energetic person. Not even in my wildest dreams could I have imagined what my life has been like for the past 5 years.

It all started in June of 2008, after a day of helping with vacation Bible school I ended up in the emergency room. I was in severe pain and could not stop vomiting blood. It turned out that I was having what is called a pancreas attack or pancreatitis. Which basically means an inflammation of your pancreas. Often a pancreas attack can be treated with pain meds and a liquid diet if not to severe. However, my pancreas was VERY inflamed. According to Webmd a normal Amylase (which is an enzyme that is measured by a blood test to determine if there is a problem with the pancreas) is between 25-125 units per liter and my level was 6,400. Because of this severe inflammation in my pancreas I was sent to a local teaching hospital where I could be seen by a specialist.

pancreas pic

The day after I arrived there I was approached by a group of doctors that were responsible for my care. They proceeded to tell me after reviewing all of my test results such as blood, urine, ct scan, MRI, and EKG, that they felt it was necessary to give my pancreas a “rest.” They went on to explain that I would need to have a feeding tube placed and kept in for at least a few months to give my pancreas time to come back to normal size and try to function properly again. I remember feeling like a ton of bricks hit me. At first I was angry and responded cruelly  I told them they were crazy I wasn’t going to need a feeding tube I just needed to rest a little longer and I would be fine. I was scared because how was I going to care for four children while hooked up to a pump to feed me at all times. What kind of crap were they trying to feed me? I mean who wanted something like this sticking out of them for months.

feeding-tube

PEGimage

I have to give them credit where credit is due. They did not push the issue they gave me time to think about my situation. But there was one doctor I came to really trust during the time. I could tell he had my best interest at heart. The next day he came in my room alone with some pictures and test results. He sat down with me and showed me everything. He explained everything very thoroughly. And he said the one thing I needed to hear to put things in perspective. He told me that I was worried about my children and how I was going to raise them, but if I did not take the feeding tube I was taking a chance that I would not live much longer. He explained that my pancreas was very swollen and damaged, that I would not be able to eat because as soon as I did my pancreas would try to work and send me straight back into another attack. He explained that another attack in the condition my pancreas was in I would not be able to survive!!

As a mother there was no way I could take that chance. A few months of difficulty was definitely worth being here for my babies.

all-four-grab-button

Oh but little did I know HOW much difficulty was too come!!!!

Stay tuned to here the rest of my story. Learn how one doctors mistake almost cost me the life I was fighting so hard to keep and how chicken noodle soup is the DEVIL!!!!

I will have Part 2 for you all tomorrow. I know you are so anxious to hear the rest BUT you will have to wait BAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Until Next Time

Where has the Time Gone?

Where has the Time Gone?

13 Years, it can not be possible!!! My baby girls are 13 today.

I was 16 years old and scared out of my mind. Now I had two babies to be completely responsible for 24 hours a day. Heck I didn’t even know what it was like to have to worry about a bill or buying groceries or anything remotely adult like but now I had the most adult responsibility there could be times TWO!!!

TEENS AHHHHHHHH!!!!  I ask my self all of the time if I am ready for this part of their life. I wonder if I am going to be able to show them how to be good people who love God. But I know the same God that trusted me with them 13 years ago trusts me with them now. Look at how beautiful they are now.

The Truth Shall Set Me FREE!!!

The Truth Shall Set Me FREE!!!

About a week ago I attended a ladies night at my church. We had dinner together and spent some time in worship together. I had a really great time connecting with the women I know as my Sisters in Christ. I realized a few things through out the evening. One is that I have been craving the togetherness with other women who understand what my life is like. Even though we all do not live the same life, we all have one thing in common. We desire a relationship with God, a connection like no other. We all also know the feeling of failure, the distance of sin.  Second, in that room full of women some I just met and some I have grown to love over the years I realized I am not as different from all of them as I thought I was.

You-are-Not-Alone

Every since I came to know Christ about 7 years ago I have felt like I was the wayward child who would never be able to “be” good enough to actually be loved by God. It’s not at all that I doubted His love for me, it was doubting my deserving His love for me. Actually I even told myself that my doubting God’s love for me due to my sin was a lack of faith, because it is written in His word that He loves me no matter what. However, I was choosing to think and still do think He loves me based on my performance in life. Based on how good of a person I really am. My logic was and often still is why would God love someone who struggles with  many things such as anger, depression, prayerlessness, lack of faith, and the list goes on. But on that night I realized I am not alone. I really am not alone. Every single one of those women struggled with something. Many struggled with a lot just like me. While we were there we all made a list of things that are keeping us from the fruit of the spirit. It was so awesome to put into words the things that I feel on almost a daily basis, and seeing that others shared in my pain. It was so freeing to not be alone anymore.

chains

That night when I got home I decided I was going to share with all of you my struggles. I am not going to hide anymore. I am going to find truth, as we all know truth is the only thing that can set us free. And there is only one place in this whole universe where we can receive 100% truth and that is the Bible. So I thought once or twice a week I would share with you one of my struggles that is on my list and along with that I will share the truth I have found in God’s Word about that particular struggle. I am committing myself to researching what God has to say about every struggle I have that keeps me from the glory He has created in me when I was born again.

freedom

It is time to do my part!! God has been waiting for me to want to study His word and know the truth. I invite you to join in with me. Search your heart, do you have a struggle that is holding you back from God or many as I do. Make a list if you need to. Tackle one at a time. Find your truth, you deserve it.

If you have any questions or would like to talk please feel free to let me know or email me at the address listed on my contact me page. I love to hear from you.

Until Next Time

Help Me Please

Recently on of my tween daughters has been having a very hard time emotionally. For a long time I thought it was just the normal emotions that a teenage girl experiences while her body is changing. I also thought it was her having a hard time with the court battle that is going on between her real father and myself.

A little back story is needed to understand. Her father and I have not been a couple for 10 years now and my husband has been the biggest father figure in her life now for 9 years. For the most part her father, my husband, and myself have gotten along. I have always tried to be liberal with allowing him to see her and her twin sister when he wanted. However, recently there has been some issues with the decisions he makes while he had the girls on overnight visits. So after attempting to talk to him a few times about the problems, I decided it would be better to petition the court to have his visitation changed to a less flexible time frame. When I did this it caused her father to get very mad and he hired a lawyer and turned this into a court battle.  Because the girls have always had liberal visitation with their father they have a close relationship with him. So I really think that  the court battle is causing the girls to feel as though they need to choose sides. Even though I have spoken to the and told them that it will be over soon and they do not need to pick sides.  I don’t think my words can heal what they feel is going on.

So when my daughters behavior and emotions started getting worse and worse I decided it was time to get her a counselor. I really didn’t know what else to do. I consulted with our Pastor and he recommended a great Christian counselor. I knew the moment I met her that God had led us to the right person to help my daughter. She is friendly and patient and kind. When we met with her for the first time I could tell that God meant for her to be my daughter’s counselor.

The counselor spent over an hour meeting with my daughter and then brought me into the room to meet with both of us. She started explaining to me that she believe my daughter has ADD or Attention Deficit Disorder. She went on to say that ADD is genetic and she would like to have us both tested. To be completely honest I have thought before that I may have ADD for many reasons. But I have to be completely honest I never thought my daughter may have it. I have always known she has a hard time focusing and getting tasks done. I have had meetings with her teachers before about this kind of behavior. More and more recently I have been getting complaints about her having outbursts in class. I have also worried about her complete obsession with One Direction. However, I wrote it all off as a part of becoming a teenager. I mean this is my first go at raising teenagers. Her twin sister and her are my oldest children and when they came out I looked for the manual but could not find it!!! Now everything is starting to make more sense. I do know however that ADD is highly over diagnosed in this country and that the medications can cause more problems than they are worth. My brain can not seem to wrap around this and come up with a feasible plan.

So that is why I am reaching out to all of you. If you have ANY resources at all to offer me on ADD please, please, please share. If you have experience, ideas, knowledge, or anything please let me know. You can email me personally at the email provided on the contact me page or you can leave a comment here. I really need help and advice. I feel like a fish out of water right now. I completely know and trust that God has a plan behind all of this but I need to know what is the right direction for my daughter and even for myself. Also if you are a prayer warrior please add us to your prayer list. I know prayer can move mountains and it will be greatly appreciated.

Best Time to Plant Vegetables by Season

It’s almost spring which is my favorite season. Every thing seems to start fresh after a long cold winter. Trees begin to have color again, flowers start to bloom, and of course the weather begins to warm. I don’t know what it is about the weather warming that gives me a renewed energy. I love seeing people planting their flowers and gardens. Oh the gardens. I love gardens of all kinds. I admire the flowers and the perfectly lined vegetables. However, if you are completely dumbfounded by gardening as I am it can be kind of depressing. I know one of my biggest downfalls is not understanding how to plant correctly. I get confused at what plants should be planted near one another, how much space, light, water they need, and most of all what is the best time to plant the vegetables by season.  Since I completely lack the knowledge of gardening I feel blessed to have a friend such as Amber Collins who writes great gardening articles for The TT Diaries. I knew she would be able to write a fabulous post for all of you on what vegetables to plant during each season. So without further adieu please enjoy!!

Best Time to Plant Vegetables by Season

What is the best time when it comes to planting vegetables? You can plant a wide variety of plants regardless of season and you can even recreate an indoor garden with some clever application of grow lights and supplies. You can use a container garden with vegetables indoors at pretty much any time during the year, as well as potted plants. This gives you significant flexibility as time goes by – you can also make a raised bed garden by using vertical gardening; this will save you some space as well as allowing you to avoid the cold weather outside. So what can you plant starting from the beginning of a year until the end? We will answer this in this article:

January
You can plant lettuce, turnips, broccoli, carrots, celery, mustards, potatoes, collards, beets, radishes, peas, cauliflower and a number of herbs. These can be fennel, coriander, thyme, mint, sage, parsley, rosemary, chives, catnip and cardamom. As the month goes by you can also sow squash, tomato seeds in an indoors garden for transplants, pepper, cucumbers and eggplants.

February
You can still plant the aforementioned plants, but you can also plant beans, corn, watermelons and cantaloupes. You can start some eggplant, tomato and pepper seeds so you can have your transplants ready within several weeks.

March
You can prepare the early planting of corn, peppers, watermelons and tomatoes. You can also plant crops such as okra, beans, eggplants, cucumbers, peas, cantaloupes and squash. You can also plant chives, sage, dill, oregano, borage, savory, mint, rosemary, marjoram and comfrey.

April
You can plant vegetables such as sweet potatoes, cantaloupes, beans, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, okra, peppers, squash, eggplants and peas. You can also plant herbs such as all of the mentioned in March.

May
You can continue the planting of okra, beans, collards, peas, sweet potatoes, spinach and cherry tomatoes. This is also the best time to plant basil, dill, savory, thyme, mint, sage and marjoram in your garden.

June
This is the best time for planting okra, sweet potatoes, cherry tomatoes and peas. The herbs for this part of the year are basil, dill, marjoram, mint, oregano and chives.

July
You should plant heat-resistant vegetables such as beans, pumpkins, peas, okra, cherry tomatoes and sweet potatoes. The herbs for the month are basil, oregano, chives, marjoram, mint and dill. By the middle of the month you can also saw tomatoes, pepper seeds and eggplants for your transplants at the end of August.

August
You can sow watermelons by the end of the first week of the month. You should wait until the middle of the month if you want to plant cucumbers, peppers, celery, tomatoes, corn, onions, eggplants, beans and squash.

September
You can plant beans, squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers and eggplants by the middle of the month. You should start the transplants for the cool season such as celery, cauliflower, onions, lettuce and Brussels sprouts. This is also a good time to plant anise, coriander, marjoram, lavender, sage, rosemary, borage and fennel. You can begin the preparations for strawberry beds if you want any.

October
This is a time for mustards, onions, cauliflower, beets, lettuce, radishes, turnips, peas, broccoli, spinach, carrots an collards. You can now plant the strawberries as well. This is the last time of the year for planting garlic, marjoram, borage, anise, rosemary, mint, coriander, fennel and chives.

November
You can sow beets, collards, onions, mustards, cauliflower, turnips, broccoli, peas, spinach, carrots, cabbage, Swiss chard, rutabagas and radishes. This is also a decent time to plant indoor versions of rosemary, coriander, garlic, thyme, anise, lavender, dill and fennel.

December
You can keep your vegetables alive by planting cabbage, onions, beets, broccoli, radishes, peas, mustard, carrots, lettuce and more. This is also a good time for planting indoor herbs like the ones mentioned for November.

Calling It Quits

Do you ever have one of those days where you just don’t want to be a mother anymore? Please tell me I’m not alone. Please tell me I’m not the only one that looks at my children and wonder, “how could I have possibly thought these creatures would bring me joy?”

And on those days, let’s be real. They aren’t children, humans even. They are just what I called them… creatures.

Some days just one child can make you feel like this or there are those wonderful days in which each child has done something to make me question God’s ultimate plan.

That day, most recently, was Tuesday.

Yes, what should’ve been just a regular Tuesday turned into one that by the time I was done, required me to take a walk around the house… just to cool down.

I was hot.

And by hot I mean, I mean just climbed to the top of the Lighthouse in Key West, hot. And we all know what I look like after that.

Yeah. Not real good. Only I looked worse, because when you’re that angry there are tears. I want to look at them and yell, “I do so much for all of you and this is how you repay me?” But I don’t.

Their repayment was not doing homework, using a device they weren’t suppose to use, mouthing off and just plain not paying attention.

By the time the hubs walked in the door, I simply looked at him and said, “Unless you, too, want to be grounded, it might be best if you just steer clear for a bit.”

And I need you to know that I HATE to ground my kids because I also get punished. I don’t like to be punished. But I will when I ask them a gazillion times to do something and they don’t. I will when they deliberately disobey what I have told them to do or not to do. I will when they run their mouth as if I’m one of their little friends and not their mother. I will when they don’t do their homework.

I’ll do it.

So guess what the whole family is doing now?

Reading.

They thought that because they couldn’t get on the computer or any electronic devices that they would just watch TV all the day long.

Do they think I’m dumb?

(Don’t answer that. Because I’m pretty sure they think I was born yesterday.)

So now for every hour of TV they want to watch they have to give me 30 minutes of reading time.

And when they are allowed to have their electronic devices/computer time back, I’m pretty sure I’m going to keep that rule.

Days like Tuesday are days that I just want to walk away from it all, to run as far as I can and never look back, because clearly they don’t need me — they know it all, they know what’s best for them and they can do it better than me.

I don’t want to endure this.

Parenting is HARD STUFF.

There is no book. There is no clue. It’s trial and error and each kid is so stinkin’ different.

So what do I do to get through it?

I remind myself that God’s not done with any of them yet.

And then?

Conviction hits me like a ton of brinks and I’m not so politely reminded that…

…God’s not done with ME yet.

And so I keep on keeping on… I’m reminded of a passage from John Wesley’s diary.

Sunday, a.m. May 5 Preached in St. Anne’s. Was asked not to come back anymore.
Sunday, p.m. May 5 Preached in St. John’s. Deacons said, “Get out and stay out.”
Sunday, a.m. May 12 Preached in St. Jude’s. Can’t go back there, either.
Sunday, a.m. May 19 Preached in St. Somebody Else’s. Deacons called special meeting and said I couldn’t return.
Sunday, p.m. May 19 Preached on the street. Got kicked off the street
Sunday, a.m. May 26 Preached in a meadow. Chased out of meadow as bull was turned loose during the service
Sunday, p.m. June 2 Afternoon, preached in a pasture. 10,000 people came out to hear me….

Friends, God is not done with any of us yet… but oh how I long for the day when I’m in the pasture and my children come to hear me. I know it will happen. If they are on the same track as me, it’s going to happen in about 17 years.

(Mom. I’m SOOOOOOOO sorry. Forgive me? Please?)

So how about you? What do you to keep yourself sane on the days that you want to quit?

Until next time….

Turn your Green Thumb into a Career

Turn your Green Thumb into a Career

Good afternoon everyone!!! I have been blessed again with a great article from my friend Amber Collins. She is very talented in the world of gardening at which we all already know from this post that I am not. I love partnering with someone who offers ideas and tips for my readers that I can not offer. Amber wrote a post a few weeks ago about indoor gardening and she had the brilliant idea of offering a career path to those of you out there who are blessed with a Green Thumb. With the job market still being unsteady I think this is a great idea. If you have any questions please feel free to leave them in a comment and we will answer as quickly as possible.

Turn your Green Thumb Into a Career

If you are one of those people who are lucky enough to have a green thumb, then you can look into the opportunities this could give you. If you have only considered this a hobby, why don’t you try to turn your hobby into a profitable career? The talent to grow and take care of plants and flowers is not that common – it’s a special talent that only few feel as a natural part of their being. Managing a small business with flowers and plants could be a great way to escape the usual 9 to 5 work day and have another option in life.

Turn your Green Thumb Into a Career

Starting a small business doesn’t require a big investment, but you need to invest your time and effort. One of the perfect ways to start is by building your own green house or setting a garden. It could be an exhausting process, but the effort it definitely worth it. With the right business plan and sense, your hobby could easily turn into a part-time job. Consider the market conditions in your area – there is nothing worse for a starting business than bad or no research on the matter. Think what the town and the area needs in terms of fruit, vegetables, flowers and plants and whether you can provide that.
If you are creative enough, you can start a business with wedding flowers and flower decorations for various events. Consider how the business works and estimate your options. For a flower business, the biggest demand is a few times a year – in late spring and summer because of the graduations and weddings, around Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day and around Christmas. Would that be enough for you to make a good profit and stay in the business?

Turn your Green Thumb Into a Career1

How about starting a fruit and vegetable business? There are plenty of sorts you can grow successfully in a green house. Moreover, you could grow spices and herbs – these are always in demand on the market. You need to understand how each business field works in order to find your own place. Focus on what you are good at and what you are passionate about. If you are turning your green thumb into a part-time career it’s all about the passion and your own unique contribution. Don’t listen to what people tell you, but do your own research instead. Concentrate on understanding the business basics and learning more about it. Gradually the results will start coming. If you have no idea where to start, ask a grocery store’s owner or manager which foods get sold the fastest. Talk to wholesalers, event managers and supermarket owners – build a network of potential clients and don’t forget to leave a business card.
